Ashrita’s Everywhere

Last night I was telling someone about Ashrita Furman’s Guinness World Record for holding the most Guinness World Records, and within an hour I discovered there were two articles in the UK news about his self-transcendence feats on the very same day.

Last night I was telling someone about Ashrita Furman’s Guinness World Record for holding the most Guinness World Records, and within an hour I discovered there were two articles in the UK news about his self-transcendence feats on the very same day. Not sure if that syncronicity, serendipity or spooky coincidence, but it’s definitely something beginning with ‘s’.

I’m familiar with Ashrita’s constant stream of record-breaking as he’s a fellow student of my meditation teacher Sri Chinmoy. He attributes his incredible capacity to the daily practice of meditation according to Sri Chinmoy’s teachings. Although I say I’m familiar with his records, it’s pretty hard to keep up, let alone remember all the facts and figures, and each one is more mind-blowing than the next. The Daily Mirror has listed all 98 of his current records in a handy list:

Hmmm… did Ashrita’s assistant maybe get fed up and abandon him after record no.60?

60. Duct-taping person to a wall: 2mins 38secs, US, Jan 08.

61. Fastest time duct taping yourself to wall 8mins 7secs, US Jan 08.

I’d like to try no.87- egg crushing with head. Sounds like fun…

Haha, well spotted, Bhashini! Yes egg crushing with head sounds more appealing than most, although probably messier than most too. If I had to choose, I would go for #145 (Popping Party Poppers). Sounds more fun than #124 (Melon Chopping on Stomach) or #140 (Lawnmower Balancing on Chin) 😀

Holy cow! Some of those records are really silly, but some are absolutely amazing!! 23 miles of pogo stick jumping! Hopping on one foot for a mile…that has to hurt. Pushed a car 17 miles in 24 hours – wow, just wow. I could barely push myself that far in 24 hours, let alone a car.

Inspiring stuff, love it!

Consistency in a way that he had been and up until now worthy of his title is already a world class achiever. I am pretty sure that it required a lot of discipline and commitment on his part.

I have heard Ashrita’s capability in keeping his record and up to this date you were write that nobody have ever defeated that record and his passion is very remarkable.
